Another Day in Court?

A lawyer for Sami Al-Arian, the former University of South Florida professor whom a federal jury failed to convict on any of 17 terrorism-related charges in December, has asked for a delay in his second trial, if there is one, the Associated Press is reporting. The jury acquitted Mr. Al-Arian on eight charges and were at an impasse on nine others (The Chronicle, December 16, 2005). Federal prosecutors may choose to retry Mr. Al-Arian on those nine counts, but they have yet to decide whether to do so. The lawyer, Linda Moreno, is seeking a delay because she and another lawyer are withdrawing from the case, and Mr. Al-Arian’s new lawyers will need time to familiarize themselves with the matter.
