Another College Not Complying With Disabilities Law, Another Settlement

Another college made peace on Thursday with the U.S. Justice Department after the federal agency reviewed its compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act and found it wanting. According to a news release issued by the department, Colorado College reached an out-of-court settlement under which it will take a series of steps to make its campus more accessible to people with disabilities.

Like a similar agreement reached last month by the University of Chicago, and described in almost exactly the same words in a news release (The Chronicle, July 19), the college did not admit it had failed to comply with the law, and it was not fined or otherwise punished. The Associated Press quoted a Justice Department spokeswoman as saying that at least 10 other colleges and universities were being scrutinized for compliance.
