Ann Reynolds to Resign in 2002, Years Early

The president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, W. Ann Reynolds, agreed last week to step down in the summer of 2002, three years earlier than she had planned.

The reasons for the planned departure were unclear. Neither she nor Thomas C. Meredith, chancellor of the University of Alabama System, would discuss what had led to her decision to resign, announced at a monthly meeting of the system's Board of Trustees.
