Americans Donated $248.5-Billion to Charity in 2004, a 2.3% Rise

Donations to charities nationwide, including those to higher education, rose in 2004, to an estimated $248.52-billion. It was the first increase for education since 2000, according to estimates released last week in "Giving USA," an annual report on the state of philanthropy.
