American Scientist Exonerated of Misconduct in South Korean Stem-Cell Scandal

A co-author of one of the papers retracted during the South Korean stem-cell scandal has been exonerated of any misconduct related to the case. Jose B. Cibelli, a professor of animal science and physiology at Michigan State University, was listed second to last on a paper published by Woo Suk Hwang’s group in 2004. That paper was the first of two published in Science that were subsequently retracted because the work was faked. An investigative committee at the university found that Mr. Cibelli could not reasonably have known of the misconduct, James M. Pivarnik, the university’s intellectual-integrity officer, wrote in a letter to Mr. Cibelli’s colleagues today. Mr. Cibelli helped to design some of the experiments and contributed “significantly” to writing and editing the manuscript, but had no access to the primary data, the yearlong inquiry found.
