American Pride, American Shame
When I look back over the history of the United States in my lifetime, I can see as many causes for shame as for pride. For we seem always to have taken three steps forward and two back. Our pride in the civil-rights movement is entirely justified, but suburban whites cannot compare their children's prospects with those of black children in the inner cities without feelings of shame.
