American Indians 'Dismissed' in Academe

It was with both sadness and joy that I read of Paula Gunn Allen's retirement from the University of California at Los Angeles after a long and often tiring tenure there ("At U.C.L.A., a Matriarch for the Study of American Indian Literature," July 16). I'm sad that she may no longer be so active in contemporary Native American studies; I'm happy for her that she will find the time now to pursue those things she has waited so long to do. And it
