American Education in Cairo

I am writing in response to Kyle Pakka's essay, "Espousing Freedom Word by Word in Cairo" (The Review, December 1). As a former colleague of Mr. Pakka's at the American University in Cairo, I felt I had to respond to his rather pessimistic description of the liberal-arts mission of the university. ...

I certainly witnessed some of the problems that Mr. Pakka did, and I shared in the frustration of trying to teach students from a different culture. I also shared
