American Academics in South Asia: a Year of Living Dangerously
By anyone's measure, American scholars and students in South Asia have had a freakish, sometimes terrifying year.
Twice in the past nine months, academic administrators have asked many exchange students and visiting faculty members posted to India and Pakistan to evacuate. In India, Hindus spread rumors that marauding Muslims were ready to sweep down upon American students. Hindu mobs, setting fire to Muslim neighborhoods and killing hundreds of people, have trapped some scholars
