Alumnae Group Changes Its Name After Legal Battle With Mississippi U. for Women

An alumnae association that was cast off by the Mississippi University for Women says it will continue to operate but under a new name, Mississippi’s First Alumnae Association.

In November the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that the university’s president had acted within her power when she cut ties with the alumnae organization, after a series of clashes over university issues, and created another group for graduates of the college, which has admitted men since 1982.

Mississippi’s First Alumnae Association says it will become an independent nonprofit organization and will continue to support the university, even though the institution no longer recognizes the group. —Kathryn Masterson
