Although It's Easier Than Mining Coal, Being a Professor Is Still Hard Work

I know that this letter will not be the only one responding to David Lester's "Complain, Complain" (Careers, March 12). ...
First, I want to thank Professor Lester for comparing academic work to coal mining -- or, for that matter, to the many other jobs that lack faculty positions' remarkable comfort, safety, and cleanliness. Like him, I tire of hearing professors speak as if such jobs either do not exist or would never be an option for us.
