Alabama Voters Reject Tax Increase
Alabama voters last week defeated, 67 percent to 33 percent, a proposal to overhaul the state's tax system, raise taxes on its wealthiest residents and corporations, and offer free college tuition to students who perform well in the state's high schools.
The controversial plan, proposed by Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican, would have raised taxes by $1.2-billion -- nearly twice what is needed to close a $675-million budget deficit -- and would have amounted to the largest tax
