One of the lobbyists hired by Alabama’s system of two-year colleges, in apparent violation of a ban on the practice, was a friend of the system’s chancellor, Roy W. Johnson, and gave him a $125,000 loan last year, The Birmingham News reported this morning. The lobbyist, Jimmie Clements, and his firm got lobbying contracts worth more than $262,000, mostly after Mr. Johnson took office. Mr. Johnson was fired last month as chancellor (The Chronicle, July 13), amid a torrent of allegations of misconduct and insider deals, including the violation of the lobbying ban (The Chronicle, July 31).
