Family members of the chancellor of the Alabama College System, Roy W. Johnson, received more than $300,000 for jobs and contracts they held last year with the state’s community colleges, and at least one member of the state Board of Education says the payouts are cause for concern.
“It’s become a family business, and it’s been quite lucrative,” the board member, Stephanie W. Bell, told The Birmingham News. “I think it sends a very bad message. It’s a poor example.”
The Johnson family received more than $560,000 from the state’s two-year colleges last year, including the $237,000 Mr. Johnson makes as chancellor of the system, according to the News. The paper reported that Mr. Johnson’s wife, son, daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law have all received money from the state’s colleges.
