Affirmative-Action Policies in Admissions Have More Victims Than Beneficiaries

Gary Orfield's essay contains a number of factual and logical errors ("Affirmative Action Works -- but Judges and Policy Makers Need to Hear That Verdict," Opinion, December 10).
* It is not true that the Supreme Court's Bakke decision "sustained the use of affirmative action in admissions by a single vote and on a single ground." ... Only one justice, Lewis Powell, endorsed the diversity rationale. The other eight did not. ...
