Aesthetics Should Not Be Studied Apart From Culture or Politics

If, as Emory Elliott suggests in "Wearying of Cultural Studies, Some Scholars Rediscover Beauty" (December 4), aesthetics "is the forbidden subject," then the police haven't been doing a very good job. I began hearing about the return to aesthetics shortly after I entered graduate school in 1989. I would suggest that aesthetics has been "forbidden" in the post-theory academy in much the same way
