Across Europe, Chasing the Money
As government purse strings tighten, universities embark on American-style fund-raising campaigns
By American standards, Adam Broadbent is hardly your typical deep-pocketed alumni donor. He has never attended a homecoming weekend or served on a fund-raising committee. In fact, after receiving his master's degree in 1966 from the London School of Economics, he maintained very little contact with the institution -- and it with him -- as he forged a career in investment banking. The school, he recalls, "made one or two stabs at me and then fell away."
