Acquisition Gives mtvU Control of Online College-Newspaper Network

MTV’s college network, mtvU, said today that it had made a deal to buy Y2M: Youth Media & Marketing Networks, which is the parent company of College Publisher, a network of 450 online college newspapers on American campuses. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by mtvU, a part of Viacom Inc., but according to a news release, the acquisition might give the newspapers more opportunities to raise advertising revenue. mtvU, which began broadcasting to college students two years ago (The Chronicle, April 16, 2004), said the deal would close during the third quarter of 2006.
