Accreditor Puts George Washington U.'s Medical School on Probation

George Washington University’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences has been put on probation by its accreditor, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the medical school announced today in a statement on its Web site.

The committee, which accredits medical schools in the United States and Canada, typically does not make public the findings in its accreditation reports. The school’s statement says the committee faulted George Washington’s program for training medical doctors for failing to meet standards in such areas as “curriculum management, lounge and study space for students, and internal administrative processes.” The statement emphasizes that all programs remain accredited during the 24-month period the school has to deal with problems noted in the report, and says it plans to make the necessary improvements within the academic year. —Charles Huckabee
