Accreditation and Distance Education

In my 25-plus years in postsecondary education, I have only rarely seen such an overblown issue as accreditation for distance education ("'Virtual' Institutions Challenge Accreditors to Devise New Ways of Measuring Quality," August 6). While Dennis A. Trinkle in his essay in the same issue ("Distance Education: a Means to an End, No More, No Less," Point of View) does an excellent job of countering many of the concerns expressed in the news
