A member of Purdue University’s ice-hockey club team died on Saturday, when the van in which he was riding with several of his teammates rolled over on an ice-slicked Indiana highway.
The accident occurred just 15 minutes after a three-van caravan departed the university’s West Lafayette campus. The other two vans were not involved in the accident, but came upon the scene a few minutes later to find the vehicle on its side about 10 feet from the highway.
Andrew T. Jackson, 18, of Chanhassen, Minn., a freshman engineering student, was the only person killed in the crash. Seven other students were treated at a local hospital and released Saturday night, according to Jeanne Norberg, a spokeswoman for the universtiy.
The 20-member team, its two coaches, and a manager were traveling to an arena in Danville, Ill., for a 5 p.m. game against Holy Cross College of South Bend, Ind. —Libby Sander
