Blogging is slowly but surely catching on in academe, says Geeta Dayal, a freelance writer.

"For some in the academy, blogging offers an escape valve, a forum for free expression that's not bound to the constraints of their fields," she writes.

Some academic writers make their blogs anonymous, so they can gripe about their daily frustrations without fear of reprisal, Ms. Dayal says. Others see
