Academic Writing: 'Any Idiot Can Write 800 Pages'
To the Editor:
Kudos to Gail A. Hornstein for advising scholars to write for readers beyond academe (The Chronicle Review, "Prune That Prose," September 11). The importance of pruning was brought home to me by an editor who told me to never have a sentence longer than a paragraph and never have a paragraph longer than a page.
The lesson was reinforced recently when I was reading autobiographical essays
