Academic Freedom as a Right and a Philosophy

How can someone so smart be so wrong? American academe's most charming contrarian gives us a false choice ("Academic Freedom Is Not a Divine Right," The Chronicle Review, September 5): Is academic freedom a philosophical concept or a guild concept? Stanley Fish asks, before telling us that the answer is (surprise!) "guild." He tells us too that "academic freedom is just a fancy name for being allowed to do your job" and that sometimes the notion is "invoked as an excuse
