Academic-Freedom Dispute Spreads at U. of Hong Kong; Some British Students to Get Free Cell Phones; Nigerian Professors Threaten Strike Over Government Support
A controversy over academic freedom continues to spread at one of Asia's leading universities.
An academic pollster has charged that the University of Hong Kong tried to pressure him to stop inquiring into the public's opinion of the Beijing-appointed chief executive of the former British colony, Tung Chee-hwa.
The university announced that a three-member panel led by a retired judge would look into the charges of attempts to stifle academic freedom.
