A Tenure Suit at U. of Oregon

To the Editor:

I was greatly disappointed by The Chronicle's lack of balance in the story regarding the possible settlement by the University of Oregon of a lawsuit brought by Lisa C. Arkin ("Ore. Settles Tenure Suit Over Maternity Leave," Faculty Notes, July 21). Most troubling was the attribution to me of statements I never made, and the associated implications regarding treatment of women faculty members at the University of Oregon, which are manifestly untrue.
