When Northeastern U. cut its football team, Jocquez Fears, a defensive back, transferred to Georgia State U., which is starting a team. "I do kind of miss the snow," he says.

Jocquez Fears doesn't like to remember the day in November when officials at Northeastern University eliminated the football team.

"It came out of nowhere," says the 19-year-old defensive back. "I was very upset."

A native of Fairburn, Ga., Mr. Fears arrived on Northeastern's campus in the fall of 2008. Drawn to the university's cooperative work-and-study program, the aspiring graphic designer says he took to the fast-paced city life and even grew accustomed to the long Boston
