AT ISSUE: Fire safety in college dormitories.

GIST: Bills introduced this month in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate would establish federal standards for fire safety, requiring sprinklers, smoke detectors, and flame-resistant furniture for dormitories. Colleges would be forced to bring their dormitories up to code by 2010 and to tell students and parents about fires and plans to make dorms safer.
