A Quota System for Grades
To the Editor:
I found the events related in Scott Smallwood's "Professors Lose Money for Awarding Too Many A's" (January 30) fairly distressing. ...
Let's say that all the students in a class score 100 on their assignments for a term. In a quota situation, these students' assigned grades -- presumably a few A's and F's, and more of everything in between -- would be entirely arbitrary. It might not seem as flagrantly arbitrary if student scores were more varied, but
