A New Source of Research Money

These are especially difficult times for researchers who depend on government money. Their "anxiety is palpable," Elias A. Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health, wrote last year. And Leo Furcht, president of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, recently warned Congress that "we are, quite simply, losing our global position as the leader in science and technology."
