A New Map of Human Genetic Variation May Help Treat Diseases

An international team of scientists last month unveiled a new catalog of genetic variation among people that should help speed the understanding and treatment of common disorders such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

"This is a profound step forward," said Michael O. Leavitt, U.S. secretary of health and human services. "It is a triumph for collaborative science."
