A New Face for Education in a Second Bush Term

After Secretary Paige resigns, the president names a trusted adviser

The reins of leadership at the U.S. Education Department will change hands in January.

Early last week Education Secretary Roderick R. Paige announced that he would step down from his post at the end of President Bush's first term. Two days later the president nominated Margaret Spellings, his domestic-policy adviser and a self-described "hawk" on education-accountability issues, to replace Mr. Paige.
