What is it: A molecule that interrupts the role that folic acid normally plays in the reproduction of cancer cells.
The market: The molecule has potential for use against a variety of malignant tumors. A drug based on the molecule has already been approved as a treatment for lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths. In the United States alone, about 174,000 people are diagnosed with the lung disease each year, according to the American Cancer Society.
