A National University? The Time Is Now
Perhaps we needed to listen to George after all — Washington, that is. In his first State of the Union address more than 200 years ago, President Washington proposed the creation of a public university. In his will, he even left money for such an institution — "to be established within the limits of the District of Columbia, under the auspices of the General Government" — and encouraged Congress to "extend a fostering hand" toward it.
