A Modern Encyclopedia for American Studies
To the Editor:
We are delighted that Leonard Cassuto, in his essay on the Encyclopedia of American Studies ("American Studies: Grasping at a Moving Target," The Review, March 1), calls it "a surprisingly good read" and applauds the articles'"welcome sense of style and personal voice."
Although he finds the articles engrossing, Mr. Cassuto raises the question of why anyone would want to consult an encyclopedia of American studies in the first place. In fact, as our preface
