A Japanese University Embraces Foreigners

Institution uses bilingual classes and an American-style campus to create a multicultural atmosphere

Two years ago, one of the icons of traditional Japanese higher education in historic, temple-studded Kyoto took a risk. Ritsumeikan University, on its 100th anniversary, established a totally new, independent university with a radical policy -- for Japan -- of trying to attract foreign students by offering bilingual classes and a multicultural environment.
