A Hong Kong Studio Has Wide Influence, but an Uncertain Future
Summer and Christmas are supposed to be the blockbuster seasons for the Hollywood imperialists. It's ironic, then, that Shanghai Noon, starring Jackie Chan, and Mission: Impossible II, directed by John Woo, grabbed the lion's share of summer audiences, and that the forthcoming Christmas feature, Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Chinese martial-arts film starring Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh, is tipped to be a favorite for forthcoming Academy Award nominations.
