A Historically Black College Takes a Hands-on Approach to Student Success
In Fisk University's drive to improve its graduation and retention rates, Abimbola A. Wali is a not-so-secret weapon.
As academic adviser in the provost's office, she works with students who have been placed on academic probation or are in danger of flunking out. She dissects their choice of courses, asks professors about the students' classroom performance, and prescribes frequent tutoring sessions. Some students are encouraged to set aside regular "no call" times, when they turn off
