A Historian Makes the Case for Religion in Public Life

Many Americans say the attacks of September 11 made clearer than ever the dangers of mixing politics and religion. But Wilfred M. McClay, a professor of history at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, believes the United States risks taking secularism too far. He is the co-editor, with Hugh Heclo, of Religion Returns to the Public Square: Faith and Policy in America, due out in November from the Johns Hopkins University Press.
