A Hard Year in College Sports
Academic scandals, coaching embarrassments, raids by conferences, and other problems set the tone in 2003It was a tempestuous year off the field for college sports. Coaches got fired for breaking rules and committing indiscretions. Colleges dropped teams to save money. Conferences raided each other for new members. Battles continued over gender equity and academic standards. There was even a murder.
