Mobilize.org, a national organization dedicated to increasing the civic engagement of youth, is seeking to inform presidential candidates about how they can appeal to the millennial generation.
The group believes that those young Americans (typically ages 16 to 30) are a major source of untapped political power and innovative ideas.
Through online forums and community meetings, the group crafted a “Democracy 2.0 Declaration” that it hopes will serve as a guide for candidates who want to capture the youth vote and motivate more young people to participate in the political process.
Education tops the list of the issues young people care about, according to Moblilize.org, which has pressed Congress to enact policies to help make college more affordable.
The group’s declaration is a broadly worded document that urges a national commitment to improving civic participation, reducing economic inequalities, and fostering a greater sense of community at local, national, and global levels.
“We are social networkers, we are multitaskers, we are communicators, and we are opinionated,” the group’s statement reads. “The informality of our generation breaks down traditional barriers and opens doors for inclusiveness and equality. Most importantly, we are leaders in a society that yearns for leadership.”
