A Free Market in Grumbling: Chicago Scholars Object to Plans for Milton Friedman Center

Not everyone in Hyde Park has embraced the University of Chicago’s plan to raise $200-million for a new economic-research center that will bear Milton Friedman’s name.

More than 100 faculty members have signed a letter objecting to the Milton Friedman Institute, the Chicago Tribune reported today. Six of the signers met on Tuesday with the university’s president, Robert J. Zimmer.

In the letter, the scholars say they are “disturbed by the ideological and disciplinary preference implied by the university’s massive support for the economic and political doctrines that have extended from Friedman’s work.”

The Friedman institute also took knocks last week in columns by Thomas Frank and Naomi Klein. For a warmer assessment, see this post by George Mason University’s Frederic Sautet. —David Glenn
