A Feast for the Mind
One of the harder things about being on sabbatical leave in a foreign country is finding an agreeable place to work. Not just a place to sit surrounded by one's books and notes, but somewhere conducive to thought. That means an equivalent society, a substitute for the community of scholars and friends left behind. It has taken me the better part of a year in London to find such a place, and it's not what I would have expected.
