A College Drops Tenure to Stay Alive

Mitchell professors have few regrets over what they gave up

Eight years ago, faculty morale at Mitchell College dropped to an all-time low. Enrollment at the small, private two-year college had slipped by 13 percent in one year, to 393 students. The deficit had climbed to $2.3-million. Students who couldn't get into prestigious four-year colleges, Mitchell's bread and butter, were heading elsewhere.
