An Alabama prosecutor has charged seven people with stealing about $56,000 in federal financial aid and sports-program money from Bishop State Community College, the latest in a series of problems to hit the college in Mobile, Ala.
The Press-Register, a local newspaper, reported that three of the individuals charged on Friday are current or former college employees, including the women’s basketball coach, Elston Turner. A total of 13 people have now been charged as a result of the state’s investigation into the college’s finances. And the Federal Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the college as well, the newspaper reported.
The U.S. Department of Education also has restricted the college’s ability to draw down federal financial aid, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has put the college on probation.
