Zachary Arend, an 18-year-old pitcher for Bluffton University’s baseball team, died this morning of injuries he suffered a week ago in the bus crash that also killed four of his teammates, the bus driver, and his wife (The Chronicle, March 5).
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mr. Arend died about 6 a.m. He had suffered brain injuries, chest and abdominal injuries, broken bones, and collapsed lungs.
Four other people remain hospitalized, said a university news release.
The baseball team was on its way to a spring-break tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. Many players were asleep when the bus sped up an exit ramp about 5:30 a.m., shot across an overpass, and fell onto the southbound travel lanes of Interstate 75. Federal officials are investigating whether the driver mistook the lefthand exit ramp for an HOV through lane.
