3,500 Workers Walk Off Their Jobs on U. of Minnesota Campuses

Some 3,500 clerical, technical, and health-care workers in the University of Minnesota system went on strike this morning, on the second day of fall-term classes, the Star Tribune reported. The university said classes would not be disrupted by the walkout, which stems from a dispute over pay. The Minnesota division of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, the union that represents the workers, said they were making less money, taking inflation into account, than they were in 1994. The university said it had made a fair offer of raises that exceed the inflation rate. —Andrew Mytelka
