Mario R. Capecchi, Martin J. Evans, and Oliver Smithies will share the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, announced moments ago. The prize, worth a total of about $1.5-million, will be presented in December. Mr. Capecchi is a professor of biology and human genetics at the University of Utah School of Medicine; Mr. Evans is director of the School of Biosciences and a professor of mammalian genetics at the University of Cardiff, in Wales; and Mr. Smithies is a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They won for “their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells,” the institute said. The Chronicle will have a fuller report on the winners later. —Andrew Mytelka
