Three students at the University of Texas at Austin who were indicted in December in connection with the alcohol-poisoning death of a fraternity pledge reached a plea bargain on Tuesday, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The students, members of the Asian-focused Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity, which has been banned from the university until 2011, pleaded no contest to hazing charges. The charges followed the death, in December 2005, of Phanta (Jack) Phoummarath, who was a freshman at Texas and a new member of the fraternity at the time.
Now Benny Chan, Andrew Nguyen, and Kamal Pulukuri must each pay a $1,000 fine, serve a two-year probation, and perform 100 hours of community service. They must also prepare an affidavit with a full account of the events of the night Mr. Phoummarath died, the Houston newspaper said, and help make an educational video on the dangers of “power drinking.” —Sara Lipka
