3 Indicted in Hazing Death of Fraternity Pledge at U. of Texas at Austin

A grand jury in Travis County, Tex., today indicted three former members of the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity at the University of Texas at Austin on charges of hazing and alcohol-related offenses.

A former president of the Asian-focused fraternity, which was banned last year from the Austin campus, was charged with seven counts of providing alcohol to a minor and 22 counts of hazing, both misdemeanors, the Houston Chronicle reported. Similar charges were filed against the fraternity’s former “pledge captain” and “Hellmaster.”

The indictments followed a yearlong investigation into the December 2005 drinking death of Phanta (Jack) Phoummarath, who was a freshman at Austin and a new member of the fraternity at the time. The grand jury found no direct link, however, between the hazing and Mr. Phoummarath’s death.
